چکیده
Following Schlenker (1999); Percus & Sauerland (2003b); Anand (2006), we assume the following semantics for attitude relations A:1 • A(λGλx′λw′ . p)(x)(w) = 1⇔ ∃G∀〈w′, x′〉 ∈ Ax . p(G)(x′)(w′) = 1 • 〈x′, w′〉 ∈ Doxx ⇔ x′ is an individual compatible with who x takes herself to be in w, and w′ is a world compatible with what x believes in w. • G is a variable over concept generators of type 〈e, 〈κ, e〉〉, with κ the type of centered worlds/contexts. For any G, attitude relation A, attitude holder x, world w, and any (shifted) context κ′ = 〈w′, x′〉 ∈ Ax , JG yiK ′ := ιy : R(x′)(w′)(y), with R a salient acquaintance relation constrained such that ιy : R(x)(w)(y) = g(i). • The idea behind G and the meaning postulate for A is to cash out Kaplan’s (1968) framework for de re attitudes in a (somewhat) compositional way.

Event anaphors – a unified account ?
This paper is concerned with different types of event anaphors in English and to some extent also in Swedish. The point of departure is the seminal work of Hankamer and Sag (1976) where two major classes of anaphors are suggested, namely surface anaphors and deep anaphors. An important distinction is that surface anaphors, such as the VP-ellipsis, demand a linguistically realized antecedent, wh...
متن کاملNoun-phrase anaphors and focus: the informational load hypothesis.
The processing of noun-phrase (NP) anaphors in discourse is argued to reflect constraints on the activation and processing of semantic information in working memory. The proposed theory views NP anaphor processing as an optimization process that is based on the principle that processing cost, defined in terms of activating semantic information, should serve some discourse function--identifying ...
متن کاملResolving Discourse Deictic Anaphors in Tutorial Dialogues
Most of the anaphoric resolution algorithms developed so far focus on anaphors with NP antecedents, be it inter-sentential or intrasentential. The main focus of this paper is to resolve various other types of anaphors such as discourse deictic anaphors found in computermediated tutorial dialogues on physics. We do this first through a corpus-based study of physics tutoring dialogues. Our approa...
متن کاملThe interplay between semantic and referential aspects of anaphoric noun phrase resolution: Evidence from ERPs.
In this event-related brain potential (ERP) study, we examined how semantic and referential aspects of anaphoric noun phrase resolution interact during discourse comprehension. We used a full factorial design that crossed referential ambiguity with semantic incoherence. Ambiguous anaphors elicited a sustained negative shift (Nref effect), and incoherent anaphors elicited an N400 effect. Simulta...
متن کاملBélanger Processing of Deep and Surface Anaphors A Replication and Extension of Tanenhaus , Carlson & Seidenberg ( 1985 ) Suzanne
Tanenhaus, Carlson, & Seidenberg (1985) found striking evidence that deep and surface anaphors, as described in Hankamer & Sag (1976) and Sag & Hankamer (1984), access different levels of representation during resolution. We argue that a full interpretation of their results is not possible without control conditions. Specifically, it is not clear whether surface anaphors affect the linguistic r...
متن کاملThe Repeated Name Penalty and the Overt Pronoun Penalty in Japanese
This research investigated the Repeated Name Penalty (RNP) and the Overt Pronoun Penalty (OPP) in Japanese. The RNP was first reported by Gordon, Grosz and Gilliom (1993), who observed that English sentences with repeated name subject anaphors were read slower than sentences with overt pronoun subjects when the antecedents were either the grammatical subject or the first-mentioned surface-initi...
